Today i wanted to focus on another aspect of goalkeeping, and probably one of the most important aspects to! Diving! wither it be to parry a ball out, or to catch. Diving is a very important skill, but also a very dangerous one, I'm still working through a concussion i got from diving wrong. It can be dangerous but with the right technique you are all set. My concussion was a sign that i needed to go back and improve my diving skills again so i did!
First off when diving, you either are having to save a hard shot of the 18 yard box where no one is really around you. Or you are literally diving right into peoples feet. That's where things get more dangerous. When diving towards someone you must always think protection first, protect yourself but also the person you are diving towards because you don't want to hurt them either. When you are on your side always bring your hands to your face and use your arm to block anything a ball, foot, or leg, from hitting you in the head. Your head must always be covered!
The next major step with diving is the follow through, when you dive you are going to slide even after you have the ball, and this can sometimes mean you have forwards charging you. if you do, you must snap your knee you have not just dove'n on up covering your stomach this again will help prevent injuries if you come in contact with another player!
Lastly you cant think when you do it, Tony diccio says "Its and instinctive reaction, if you secound guess yourself, you may as well not dive at all, you will end up miss timing the execution of the dive, and there's a small chance you will be able to successfully and properly execute a one on one situation".
Ever since i fine tuned these corrections i have been diving a lot more safer!
My question is, what are things in your life, that you have to practice safety precautions?
