As an
athlete I endure many major and minor injuries but reading Basketball: How to
Prevent, Treat, and Diagnose I learned how injuries occur and how to stop them
before they start. Unlike football, basketball players have very few protection
to their uniforms. Shorts, shoes, jersey and maybe braces or pads are as
covered as you can get but that isn’t always enough. “…basketball,
surprisingly, led all sports in the annual number or injuries, with 574,000
incidents--more than double those of baseball and over 100,000 more than
football.” (Wright 37). Unlike
coincidental things you can’t control, this book helps with things you can
control such as wearing supportive shoes. Shoes are often judged by the brand,
style, color or weight and although all are important factors, the most
important is the stability, comfort, and support. When buying the right shoes
you must never settle. The shoes you wear can make or break you, literally. The
result of buying poor shoes can range from blisters and sores to rolled ankles
and hurt toes.
In
addition to shoes, I have also learned the common injuries that occur and the
different types of injuries there are. Many injuries such as a rolled ankle are
acute. Acute injuries happen when there is a sudden hit, fall or collision with
another object or player. Acute injuries include contusions, abrasions,
lacerations, sprains, strains, and fractures. Another type of injury is
overuse. This is cause we there I a repeating action such as shooting. An
example would be the shoulder. Many NBA athletes have torn rotator cuffs from
repeatedly shooting for so many hours a day. Prevention would be resting,
stretching, icing and even rehab. Injuries can always be prevented and this
book shows just how.
Question: Have you suffered any injuries? What are way you could've prevented them?
